Once in a small, old house, there lived a man and his wife. They were both farmers and very poor. They raised some geese on their small farm and made a living only by selling the eggs. The man would collect the eggs and sell them to the nearest market.
One day, the man was surprised to see a sparkling object at the corner of his farm. Apparently, one of the geese had laid a golden egg. “Come! Come and see this!” he yelled out to call his wife. Then his wife came running to the farm. She was also surprised to see the sparkling golden egg.
“Our goose has laid a golden egg!” she shouted happily. “We will be rich when we sell this golden egg!”
On the next day, the man went to the town. He sold the golden egg to a goldsmith. He was so happy to get a lot of money for it. “If the goose can lay a golden egg every day, then we will be rich soon!” said him to his wife. The man’s wish finally came true. The next day, he went to see the goose again and found that it had laid another golden egg.
Now, the man and his wife had a lot of money. They could buy many things that they wanted because the geese kept laying an egg each day. They both became the richest family in their town by buying a new large and luxurious house.
One day, an idea crossed the man’s mind, “Hmmm, if the goose lays a golden egg every day, so there must be many golden eggs inside of its stomach.” Then he took a knife from the kitchen and walked toward the goose’s coop, “All I need to do is cut its stomach and I will get more golden eggs,” said him greedily. He caught the geese and cut open its stomach. However, he could not find any golden eggs inside it.
The man was very disappointed and felt really guilty after killing the goose. He realized that he had done a terrible mistake. Now, it was dead and there would be no more golden eggs for him.

Suatu hari, lelaki tersebut terkejut melihat sebuah benda berkilau di sudut kebunnya. Nampaknya, salah satu dari angsanya bertelur emas. “Kemari! Kemarilah dan lihatlah ini!” teriaknya memanggil istrinya. Lalu istrinya datang sambil berlari ke kebun. Dia juga terkejut melihat telur emas yang berkilauan tersebut.
“Angsa kita bertelur emas!” dia berseru gembira. “Kita akan jadi kaya kalau kita menjual telur emas ini!”
Di hari berikutnya, lelaki tersebut pergi ke kota. Dia menjual telur tersebut ke tukang emas. Dia merasa sangat bahagia mendapatkan banyak sekali uang dari telur tersebut. “Kalau angsa itu bisa bertelur sebutir tiap harinya, tentu kita akan kaya mendadak!” katanya kepada istrinya. Sekarang, lelaki dan istrinya memiliki banyak sekali uang. Mereka bisa membeli apapun yang mereka inginkan karena angsa tersebut terus bertelur emas tiap harinya. Mereka berdua menjadi keluarga terkaya di kotanya dengan membeli sebuah rumah baru yang luas dan mewah.
Suatu hari, terbersit sebuah ide di pikiran lelaki tersebut, “Hmmm, jika angsa itu bertelur sebutir telur emas tiap harinya, jadi pasti banyak telur emas yang ada di dalam perutnya.” Dia lalu mengambil pisau dari dapur dan berjalan menuju kandang angsa tersebut. “Yang perlu aku lakukan adalah membelah perutnya dan aku akan mendapatkan lebih banyak telur emas,” katanya dengan tamak. Dia menangkap angsa tersebut dan membelah perutnya. Akan tetapi, dia tak bisa menemukan telur emas apapun di dalamnya.
Lelaki tersebut sangat menyesal dan merasa begitu bersalah setelah membunuh angsa tersebut. Dia sadar kalau dia melakukan sebuah kesalahan besar. Sekarang, angsa tersebut mati dan tak akan ada lagi telur emas untuknya.
